On 30 May we unite for the third time several countries and cities in a one-day simultaneous exhibition and creative conference, ‘Cooltzine’; the third edition’s topic is 'Changes'. Participating cities this year include #Sofia, #Belgrade, #London, #Vienna, #Berlin and #Paris with speakers joining relevant panel discussions, but without hosting venues due to reformatting of the event as purely digital, in line with the health and safety regulations surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. Once again, the zine of the same name will also be available during this simultaneous international event. The associated self-publication is curated by Cooltsalon as an accessible exposure platform for creative practitioners at any career stage and the pages are created from Open call submissions.
Enabled by Cisco’s Webex platform, participants in each panel discussion will be connected in a live video transmission, and will be able to not only present but interact with each other and hear audience questions in real time.
THE ‘COOLTZINE’ IDEA
Cooltsalon doesn’t own a space, but it produces site-specific projects with many wonderful collectives across the globe. In May 2018 Cooltsalon established a ‘glocal’ ideas exchange model: a one-day simultaneous exhibition, where several cities showcased the same works to different audiences. The works came from submissions to a collaboratively created zine (“Cooltzine”). Each participating city (via a hosting venue) then received the same exhibition assets for presentation and the same zines for distribution, while contributors, hosts and attendees had the opportunity to tune into a live video stream, exploring each other’s venues. We decided to set it up as an annual event, and the second edition in May 2019 expanded to incorporate live video panel discussions between participating cities, supported by Cisco technologies, thus shifting the focus from the co-created zine to the shared experience.
Some of the venues & participants so far: Leyden Gallery (London), Stour Space (London), be’kech anti-café (Berlin), Kvaka 22 (Belgrade), Papergirl Galerija Hub (Belgrade), Cush.Bar (Sofia), MOVE.BG (Sofia), Russell Martin, Artquest (London), Nia Pushkarova, Water Tower Art Fest/Residency (Sofia), Iva Čukić, urban planner & co-founder of the Ministarstvo prostora (Collective Ministry of Space) NGO of Street Gallery (Belgrade), etc.
When talking about ‘Cooltzine’, we refer to both the one-day event, taking place simultaneously across several cities and time zones, and the collaborative zine, associated with the event.
